Meet Our Conductor
Bonnie Borchert's leadership inspires the band's members to reach greater artistic levels. Her extensive knowledge and experience results from previous conducting positions and formal musical training.
She attended East Tennessee State University (ETSU) on a full music scholarship. While there, she majored in music performance (percussion) with a cognate in jazz theory. She studied under Dr. Antonia Joy Wilson, one of the youngest female conductors to work professionally.
Bonnie’s charismatic style and unselfish dedication to HSCB has resulted in increasing prominence within southwestern Wake County. The key, she believes, is increasing the challenges presented to the band's members.
"My goal is to challenge the band to go to places that we have not been-to feel the music and play with a blindfold on more or less. To feel the music instead of seeing it," she said. "It is very easy to be caught up in choosing pieces that we know we can play well. I want to introduce the community to types of music that are new and exciting."
Prior to assuming the musical leadership of HSCB, she led numerous orchestras and concert bands.
